Youth Centre - Asda Wal-Mart

Doubts have been raised in the local press as to whether the much needed facility will provided with money to equip and staff the youth centre, as the Council desperately tries to identify savings due to relatively poor funding Swindon as a town receives from the Labour Government.

It has been estimated that to kit the centre out with computers and books and recruit one full-time and one part-time youth worker will cost £81,000.

Cllr Justin Tomlinson responds to the news, 'Without a shadow of doubt we need facilities like these for the children of Abbey Meads.  We have suffered enough with unacceptable delays on the buildings of schools, so we must not tolerate further shortages in much needed youth provision.  The Council is facing some extremely tough choices on how we spend our tightly stretched budgets, but we must apply pressure that this is one area where the money has be found.  On a wider picture, this again highlights the problems Swindon is facing due to the poor financial settlement that the Government is willing to give to Swindon.  It is about time our two Labour MP's dealt with their Goverment and sorted this mess out.  If they are unable to represent us in these situation, it makes you wonder how they justify their big MP's salaries?'
