Labour Governments Triple Whammy

In response to the provisional local government financial settlement issued by the DTLR on 4th December, Cllr Nick Martin of the Conservative Group on Swindon Borough Council said:

“Labour doesn’t care about Swindon.  The provisional local government financial settlement represents a triple whammy for the people and services of Swindon.

The Whammy:  The government has increased the standard spending assessment for local government as a whole by 5.4%, but has increased Swindon’s standard spending assessment by only 4.3%.

The Double Whammy:  The government has increased the spending assessment for education as a whole by 6.2%, but has increased Swindon’s spending assessment for education by only 4.7%.

The Triple Whammy:  The government has increased the spending assessment for social services as a whole by 5.4%, but has increased Swindon’s spending assessment for social services by only 4.9%.

The Labour government knows that Swindon Borough Council faces extreme financial difficulties.

The Labour government knows that great challenges face Swindon’s essential services such as education and social services.

But the Labour government has yet again failed to allocate sufficient funds to the people and services of Swindon.

Successive local Labour administrations have struggled to fund our schools and nursing homes and other essential services.

The Labour government’s financial settlement fails the people of Swindon.  It is clear that Labour doesn’t care about Swindon.”
