The issue of prostitution in Swindon has been giving extensive coverage in the local media recently.
I was horrified to read in the Evening Advertiser an article by two prostitutes. Basically they used prostitution as a way to feed their heroin addiction.
It is well documented how the residents in the Manchester Road area have been trying in vain to rid the area of the prostitution problem, with frustration simply increasing as even repeated arrests by the police hasd only limited success with the Courts effectively powerless to do anything. Once released the prostitutes once again return to their areas of trade, to raise the money to feed their drug addictions.
The law has to be changed. We are far too soft on drug dealers and users. Until the cycle of drug addiction is broken, the prostitutes will continue to ply their trade to feed their habit. These people need treatment, as in Sweden compulsory treatment should be given to repeat offenders. Breaking their dependance on drugs is the only way to give the prositutes a chance in life, and to help the residents be free of this filthy trade.
Also, prostitution only thrives if it has trade. We need to name and shame the kerb crawlers. This would act as a major deterent to potential 'customers', fearing their sordid lifestyle being exposed.
We need to put the law abing majority first, not the criminal minority.
