Public Could Be Denied Access To Roman Ruins

Ruins

Swindon is home to one of the country's most important archeological finds but there are fears it will remain hidden from the public even when excavation work is complete.

The treasure trove of buried Roman buildings on a 12-acre site on Groundwell Ridge is surrounded on all sides by new houses and roads. This means that when the site is uncovered in about 20 years time public access will be severely limited.

A Groundwell Ridge Roman Complex Working Party has been set up to ensure the problems concerning public access, parking and visitor facilities are carefully examined.

Councillor Owen Lister describes himself as the chief pusher behind the new working party and is determined to ensure the site, which was discovered six years ago, is fully accessible to visitors.

Councillor Owen Lister said: "The present plan is that people will park their cars at the car park in Asda Walmart which is about 15 minutes walk away.

"But I don't believe people will want to walk across a busy dual carriageway."

The site, which was saved from development following an eight-week Evening Advertiser campaign, was bought by Swindon Borough Council and English Heritage for £1million.

Councillor Owen Lister said: "It is a very undesirable state of affairs. Having spent £1 million it looks like only a small number of people will get to see anything.

"With the long term closure of Lady Lane, access now looks even more difficult.

"Something has to be worked out now before it is too late."
