Swindon has a brand new library, the first in nearly 20 years. Located at the North Swindon District Centre it is a 3,500 square metre facility.
With over 32,000 items available for loan, the library has something for everyone. As well as housing a plethora of books, CD's, videos and DVD's, there is also an exhibition space and children's area.
For those people that like to browse and take time to select, there is a 'read and relax' area to help everyone make the right choice when selecting books.
In addition to all these facilities there are 24 People's Network computers funded by the New Opportunities Fund all offering free internet access. Adjacent to the new library there will be an IT training centre operated by Swindon College in partnership with the library service.
New cabinet lead member for cultural services and recreation Councillor Justin Tomlinson said the opening of the library was an exciting moment for the area. "The North Swindon library is at the leading edge of library provision. Obviously we still have the problem of replacing the central library but there is cross party support for developing a solution. The lessons learnt from North Swindon will be applied to provide a new state of the art library in a few years."
"I'm glad that this library will be opening on Sundays, the first in Swindon. It will draw in many new users.
Everyone is welcome to join and the library is particularly interested in gaining new customers. There is no charge to. New users just need to bring identification showing their name and address in order to become a member. Existing library customers will be able to use their current library cards.
