19/08/05 - Cllr Tomlinson Calls For National Service For Criminals
ITV's 'Bad Lads Army' has inspired a local Councillor to call for tougher action on local criminals.
Councillor Justin Tomlinson, (Conservative, Abbey Meads) is calling for National Service for Swindon's growing number of Asbo generation criminal youngsters.
"I am fed up of listening to the endless excuses of this Labour Government. Too often these serial criminals are in and out of court / prison causing misery to the law abiding majority."
"For those who have seen the programme, the transformation of this group of criminals is amazing. The structure, team building and hard work provides them with a purpose and direction, and in many cases it is the first time they have faced any form of discipline."
"I would support a form of national service for young criminals, it strikes me as the most constructive way to break the cycle of crime."
Fellow Conservative, Abbey Meads Councillor, Peter Stoddart who did his national service 1958-60, "It did me the world of good; it made me into a man."
Bad Lads is shown on ITV every Thursday at 9pm
