DAVID LLOYD LEISURE UNVEILS PLANS FOR NEW SWINDON CLUB
David Lloyd Leisure has unveiled plans (4th October 2005) to
provide a new racquets, health and fitness club in the town.
A full planning application has been submitted to Swindon Borough Council
for a 'racquets club with associated sporting, recreational and fitness
facilities' to be built on the Groundwell site next to the Motorola
building in Abbey Meads.
David Lloyd Leisure has been searching for a location in Swindon for some
years and says the site at Groundwell fits the bill.
The proposed club would provide a range of high quality family facilities
including:
* Three outdoor tennis courts
* Five indoor tennis courts
* 25m indoor training swimming pool, spa and leisure pool
* 20m outdoor training swimming pool with children's play pool
* Multi-use indoor area for badminton, basketball or indoor football
* Outdoor terrace
* High quality changing rooms
* Air conditioned fitness hall with state of the art equipment
* Two dance/aerobic studios
* Clubroom containing a bar, restaurant and café
* Crèche for members' children
* Hair and beauty salon
"We believe these proposals will form an essential part of Swindon's bright
future and will complement the town's existing leisure facilities," said
Mark Webb of David Lloyd Leisure.
"Our proposals fit in with the existing planning brief for the site and if
the council approves the plans, work on the club could potentially start in
spring 2006 with an opening scheduled for mid 2007.
Councillor Justin Tomlinson (Abbey Meads), "This is fantastic news for Abbey Meads. As the Councillor for Abbey Meads I have been working hard to support this application. It will bring in much needed leisure facilities to the rapidly expanding Northern Sector. I will be fully supporting these plans, and look forward to working with them in the future."
