21/11/05 - Victorian Christmas Event At STEAM

FIRST-EVER VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS EVENT AT STEAM

The Victorians gave us many of our Christmas traditions, including the Christmas tree - and this year the spirit of a Victorian yuletide will be recreated at STEAM.

The first Victorian Christmas event, which takes place over the weekend of 3rd and 4th of December, will offer a wide range of gift ideas and entertainment in the railway museum, which aims to recreate the unique festive atmosphere of the era.

Craftspeople will be selling a wide variety of products, including leatherwork, ceramics, pictures, cards, jewellery books and food. There will be practical demonstrations of Christmas wreath-making, and Arkell's brewery will be offering a wide range of beers to take away.

There will also be opportunities for visitors to make their own gifts, in the tradition of the Victorians.

Rides will be available on Santa's Steam Train, while there will be a Christmas play, the Happy Prince, aimed at the whole family. Bellringing, dance displays and a barrel organ will also be among the attractions.

The event will be open from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December, with reduced admission to the museum on both days, of £2 for adults and £1 for children, with under-5s free.

Steam train rides will operate from 11am to 3.30pm, at £2 for adults and £1 for children.

Cllr Justin Tomlinson, Lead Member for Recreation, Leisure & Culture, which includes STEAM, "This will be a fantastic event, an ideal way for local families to prepare for the festive period!"
