the victory over KFC at planning

After several battles by residents to prevent land close to their homes on Thamesdown Drive being developed as fast food outlets, a planning application has been made for a pubm restaurant and accommodation.

Ember Inns, owned by the Mitchell and Butler chain which runs the Toby Carvery on Lady Lane closeby on the south side of Thamesdown Drive, has applied for permission to build a public house and 40 bedroomed lodge.

Abbey Meads ward Councillor Justin Tomlinson, who led the campaigning against two fast food proposals in the last five years is confident that this new project is in the best interests of the residents.  "The Ember Inn will be the only use of the site and this has allowed us to work with the developer to make sure it is in keeping with the design of the area."

"Having successfully fought off the McDonalds and KFC application against all the oddsm we're delighted that we have an application that is both appropriate and of benefit to the local community."

"This is a victory for the local residents and common sense.  I'm sure the residents will join me in hoping this will breeze through the planning process."

Although Mitchell & Butler will own two pubs within a few hundred metres of each other, they are aimed at different types of customer.  Ember Inns cater for those who want a child free atmosphere and only allow children over 14 years if they are eating a meal with an adult.  Food is served up to 8pm.  The Toby Cavery is aimed at a wider range.
