10/03/06 - Showcasing The New Secondary School

The state-of-the-art secondary school being built at North Swindon's Learning Campus is to be showcased at an open evening.

Parents and children are being invited to see for themselves what the community school has to offer at the drop-in event on Friday, 17 March (7-8pm), at Haydon Centre, Haydon Wick.

The open evening will provide an opportunity to meet the headteacher and governors, as well as see plans of the school.

There will be information about admissions and a display from the "Safer Routes to School"  team.  Education Support (Swindon) Ltd, a subsidiary of Equion Ltd, is the council's partner on the Learning Campus development and will be showing electronic versions of the school's plans.

The school, due to open to year seven pupils in September 2007, features music, drama and IT suites. The sports facilities include an all-weather pitch as well as grass pitches.

Facilities throughout the Learning Campus will be available for community use outside school hours.

Swindon Borough Council Cabinet Member for Housing, David Renard, who chairs the community liaison sub-committee, said:  "As well as being physically at the heart of the community, the school will be at its heart socially, as a facility available to everyone."

Swindon Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Garry Perkins, said: "This school will be a fabulous place for young people to thrive, learn and develop."

Commenting on the development, Ian Wells, director of Equion, said:  "We are extremely proud to be partners with Swindon Borough Council in this exciting initiative. The Learning Campus will enhance education opportunities for the Swindon community."

The building of the secondary school fulfils, in part, number 28 from Swindon Borough Council's 2010 list of 50 promises to open seven new state-of-the-art schools in the north of the Borough.

Cllr Justin Tomlinson, "This is an excellent opportunity for local residents to see what exciting facilities we have in store with our new school."
