Green Waste Collection
A free collection service for green garden waste from all Swindon households will begin on 1 April 2006. This replaces the previous system, where garden waste was only collected if it was packed into special sacks provided by the Council, at a cost of £1 each.
All green garden waste will now be collected free every fortnight as long as it is in a green sack, so that it can easily be identified by Council refuse collectors. Green sacks are widely and cheaply available.
A leaflet explaining the new free green waste collection service will be delivered to all households during March 2006. This will detail collection dates for the new service and how residents can take advantage of it. Alternatively, information is available on our web page: http://www.swindon.gov.uk/publicservices/waste/householdwaste/gardenwaste.htm
The waste collected will be recycled and turned into a valuable compost and soil improver. The change is being introduced so that Swindon can increase the amount of waste that is recycled, and reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.
Cllr Justin Tomlinson, "Local residents have long been calling for this to be introduced, and it is a further example of service improvement under the Conservative Council."
