26/05/06 - STOP PRESS - Yet Another Labour Councillor Joins The Conservatives!

Popular, experienced Councillor Mavis Childs has today 'crossed the floor' from the Labour Party to join the Conservatives.
Councillor Mavis Childs was first elected in 1996, and has represented the Walcot Ward since then.
In recent times this is the 5th Labour Councillor to resign, of which 3 have joined the Conservatives.
Cllr Mavis Childs, "It is with some regret that I have made the decision to leave the Labour Party.
The changes I would wish for the people of Walcot have note come quick enough and my reason for becoming a Councillor was to improve their lives. First and foremost my loyalty and commitment has and always will be to the people of Walcot, it should also be recognised that the vast majority of a local councillor's work is about improving services to the local community, these decisions ultimately should not be decided by party politics. Therefore after much deliberation and thought I have decided to join the Conservative Party. I sincerely hope the people I represent will understand why I have made this decision, I am still the same person that they have come to know and I will still be as committed to serving them as I have always been, but hopefully I will now be able to deliver the things that these people have asked for to improve their lives and their environment."
Cllr Justin Tomlinson & Robert Buckland, Swindon Conservative Parliamentary Candidates, "This is yet another major blow for the Labour Party.Ateach and every electionMavis has fought since 1999 she has commanded a sizeable personal vote. With Labour Councillor after Labour Councillor joining the Conservatives, it is no wonder the Conservatives are gaining increasing support right across Swindon. The Labour Party is out of touch in Swindon, only interested in attacking the excellent progress the Conservatives and local residents have made on turning Swindon Council around, and delivering on key issues such as; Council Tax, Town Centre regeneration and the new central library. Labour is nothing more than a wasted vote."
Cllr Rod Bluh, Conservative Council Leader, "Mavis is an extremely well respected and hard working local Councillor. Her experience as a Councillor, in particular on Housing issues will be a greatasset to the Conservative Group."
Why vote Labour if there own Councillors won't even vote for them?
It is only the Conservatives who will build a better Swindon.
