03/07/06 - 'SID THE TRAIN’ BRUNEL 200 Colouring Competition Winners

Cllr Tomlinson Presenting The Prize To Winner Stephanie Cresswell

'SID THE TRAINÂ’ BRUNEL 200
COLOURING COMPETITION WINNERSÂ’

One of the winners of a colouring competition, launched as part of the Swindon Brunel 200 celebrations, was presented her prize by Councillor Justin Tomlinson at STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway.

Sid the train, is a STEAM locomotion specifically designed for the Swindon Brunel 200 celebrations, and appears in the Brunel 200 commemorative brochure as part of a childrenÂ’s colouring competition which ended at the end of June.

Over 60 entries were received and the judges poured over them all to choose three winning entries. The winners are Stephanie Cresswell (age 7), who was presented her prize, and Emily Burkhardt (age 10), both from Swindon and Nathan Whaley (age 4), from Harrow.

The winners with their families will be able to visit STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway to see all the fascinating one-of-a-kind exhibits that take you back in time to a period of great technological innovation and strenuous manual labour. The Great Western Railway was, undoubtedly, the most advanced and respected railway network in the world.

Councillor Justin Tomlinson (Abbey Meads Ward), Lead Member Culture, Recreation & Leisure said:

“It is great to see so many children having entered this competition. The year long Swindon Brunel celebrations is about involving even the youngest in the unique heritage that Swindon has. This competition is another great addition to the fantastic range of events and activities, for all the family, that Swindon has put on or are still to stage to celebrate Brunel’s birthday.“

The Judges - Helen Miah, Arts Services Manager, Jeremy Baker, Chair of the Swindon Brunel 200 Advisory Board, Martha Parry of the New Mechanics Institute Trust and Sarah Dawnay, Manager of the Swindon Cultural Partnership thought that ‘the range of styles and techniques used in the pictures was fabulous.’

Helen Miah, Brunel 200 project manager said:

“We were really pleased with the variety and standard of entries and want to congratulate the winners. The judges had lots of fun and found it quite difficult to judge due to the high standard. It was great to see entries from outside of Swindon and that many had downloaded Sid from our website”.

Sid the train will be going on tour around Swindon in the coming weeks. An exhibition of all the entries will be visiting the Outlet Village, STEAM, the Wyvern Theatre, the Community Crossroads and the Brunel 200 Festival.
