24/07/07 - New Recycling Service

New Recycling Service

The new recycling service has been launched, following the distribution of the new orange recycling boxes to all houses across Swindon. (Recycling boxes will be introduced for flats April 2008.) The weekly collection of recycling boxes from the kerbside covers paper, card, glass bottles & jars, tins & cans, textiles and aerosols. There is also the fortnightly collection of green waste and plastic bottles. This new service will be one of the best in the country.

These changes have been made because Swindon, along with everywhere else in the UK, has to reduce the amount of rubbish that is currently being buried in landfill sites. This is both to help the environment, and to avoid the Government hikes in landfill tax, which would have a severe impact on our Council Tax levels. As a Council we have set a target of 50% of all household waste to be recycled.

It is essential that local residents get in the habit of recycling as from September wheelie bins will be introduced, limiting the amount of waste that can be collected.

Whilst Swindon Council and Swindon residents are doing their bit, it is time our Labour MP helped out. The Labour Government must deal with the problems of excessive packaging - cutting the waste problem at the source is the common sense approach to tackle the waste mountain.
