16/01/09 - George Osborne Visits Swindon / Nationwide

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne today visited Swindon to see for himself the impact of Labour's recession.

Mr Osborne, accompanied by North Swindon parliamentary candidate Justin Tomlinson, visited the headquarters of Nationwide Building Society.

They held meetings with Chief Executive Graham Beale and other senior managers to discuss the economic crisis.

Mr Osborne then toured the building in Pipers Way and met staff during their lunch break.

“I am delighted that George visited Swindon today” , Justin Tomlinson said.

“He came to listen to what the bosses of Nationwide had to say, and has gone away with no doubts as to the impact of Gordon Brown’s recession.

“On the day that one of our other biggest employers – Honda – announced an extension of its shutdown, it was important that George came to Swindon.

“Gordon Brown’s visit to Swindon last week was just a cynical photo opportunity, with the Prime Minister shielded from the effects of the economic crisis which his government created.

“But today, George visited one of the companies at the very centre of the financial world - both in Swindon and nationally - and really listened to what they had to say.

“That is the difference between Labour and the Conservatives; Gordon Brown just spins, while we are working for the change that Britain so desperately needs".
