13/03/09 - Tadpole Lane Safety Measures Update

The school junction with Tadpole Lane has had a number of improvements to signing and lining, the last of which were carried out last summer as part of a trial of school safety zones in Swindon. As part of this process then we will periodically review the effectiveness of the measures installed.

In August 2006, the Department for Transport issued, "Setting Local Speed Limits", which provided advice to Highway Authorities on local speed limits on single and dual carriageway roads in urban and rural areas. The guidance asked authorities to review the speed limits on all their A and B classification roads and implement any necessary changes.

Swindon Borough Council enlisted Halcrow to carry out a speed limit review. They assessed 15 A & B roads within the Borough including the unclassified Tadpole Lane and Lady Lane . Their report recommended that the speed limit on Tadpole Lane and Lady Lane be reduced to 50mph in line with the governments recommendations for unclassified rural roads.

In October 2008 a report was passed to the Cabinet and the decision was made to implement the recommendations made by Halcrow. It is proposed that work to reduce the speed limit on Tadpole Lane/Lady Lane will be carried in the new financial year 2009/2010.
