30/04/09 - Improvements Continue In Physical Activity Rates

I am delighted to report that the physical activity rates continue to improve in Swindon, exceeding the the target of a 1% annual increase.
In addition the usage figures for the Swindon Council leisure centres has increased.
Since we took control of Swindon Borough Council in 2004 we have made leisure one of our key priorities with a number of improvements:
- We have invested in improved facilties across the Swindon Council leisure facilities including:
- Oasis - New slide and refurbished cafe and changing rooms
- Link - New 6-a-side 3G football pitches, significant ice-rink improvements and refurbished cafe and changing rooms
- Highworth - Significant funding towards the new swimming pool roof project
- Dorcan - New flagship netball facility
- County Ground - Refurbished cricket pavillion
- Supported and encouraged private leisure investment including:
- David Lloyd
- Futsal (Football) Indoor Facility
- Next Generation
- Organised a series of events including:
- Annual festival of sport
- Swindon half-marathon
- Launched the extremely successful Sports Forum
- £6m investment in Lydiard, with further improvements to follow for Coate and Moulden Hill.
