28/06/09 - Work Begins At PS7, Oakhurst Primary School





Cllr Justin Tomlinson officially cut the sod to begin the work on PS7, the new Primary School for Oakhurst.
Cllr Justin Tomlinson had led a local campaign, working with local residents to firstly secure funding for the school, but also to win a competition process against a faith school bid. For a full history of the campaign please view:

Whilst work on site has only just begun, the first intake of children will be this September will local parents snapping up places in the initial temporary buildings whilst the school building work is completed ready for the 2010 in take.

Swindon Commercial Services Information On The Construction
Swindon Commercial Services (SCS) Major Projects Team have secured the construction of PS7,
The School is a new build 2 storey, 2 Form entry Primary School with Nursery and Community facilities which make up a building footprint of 2019m2. The remainder of the site will be divided to include playing fields, soft informal play areas, hard play courts and environmental habitat.
The facility will accommodate 420 pupils with a further 26 full time equivalent Nursery places. The Building is also designed to encourage community use by providing dedicated self contained meeting rooms.
During the construction period, SCS will provide fully serviced and secure temporary mobile classrooms.
The project has been designed to embrace green and environmental aspects, some of which are detailed below:
· Surface water from the school roof will discharge into a sustainable rainwater harvesting systems and will be used for flushing toilets;
· Any overflow from the harvesting system, plus rainwater collected via permeable hard play and paved surfaces will be discharged into water courses adjoining the site boundaries in accordance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) practice;
· Part of the non accessible roof structure is to include a naturally growing green sedum roof;
· We will be installing Pergolas in the external decked teaching areas to provide shelter for feeder plants to grow;
· Photovoltaic cells will be installed on areas of the roof for electricity production;
· Strategically placed sun-pipes will be utilised to gain the best possible advantage of solar energy;
· Ventilation will be provided by non mechanical passive means.
The overall cost of this project is £6.65 m and will be completed and up and running in time for the new school term starting September 2010.
