09/07/10 - Councillors Leafleting This Weekend Over Aldi Supermarket Plans

Abbey Meads ward councillors will be delivering more than a thousand leaflets this weekend urging residents to have their say over the proposed Aldi supermarket off Thamesdown Drive.

The leaflets will be delivered to homes in St Andrews Ridge and the Blunsdon Abbey mobile home park. They will remind residents that the deadline for comments on the Aldi planning application is Monday July 19.

Cllr Peter Heaton-Jones said, "When Vera Tomlinson, Peter Stoddart and I attended the public meeting, many residents expressed concern that not enough information about the Aldi proposals was being distributed. So we promised that once a formal planning application was lodged, we would deliver leaflets to residents nearest the site of the proposed supermarket. That's what we're doing this weekend."

Cllr Vera Tomlinson said, "The leaflets don't give our views - they ask residents to make their voices heard. We've included brief details of the plans and some possible pros and cons to get people thinking. But most importantly we've provided all the information needed for people to view the plans onthe Swindon Borough Council website, and the addresses for all comments."

Cllr Peter Stoddart said, "We've produced the leaflets in double-quick time and aim to deliver them all this weekend, so that people will have, at the very least, a week to get their comments in before the deadline. The leaflets have been paid for by Swindon Conservatives - no council taxpayers' money has been spent on them".
