23/01/11 - Future of Historic Footbridge to be Discussed

A meeting will be held this week to discuss the future of an historic footbridge over the River Ray following fears that it may be removed.

The bridge crosses the river close to Berriman's Wood, and is used by Abbey Meads residents to access the newly-improved Mouldon Hill Country Park and lake.

Ward Councillor Peter Heaton-Jones, who is also a Haydon Wick Parish Councillor, said, "The Parish Council has expressed their concerns about any plans to remove this footbridge.  A meeting has been arranged this week between Parish Councillors and officers from the Borough, and I'll be attending that meeting to see what can be done.

"Mouldon Hill continues to be popular with visitors following the opening of the new car parks and footpaths.  Many Abbey Meads residents use this bridge as a shortcut to the Park.   With all the improvements there, it would be a real shame if access was restricted.

“I’m working with Haydon Wick Parish and the Borough Council to try and find a way round this.  Obviously the bridge needs maintaining and money is tight, plus there are rights of way issues, but we are trying to find a solution”.
