12/07/11 - Ignore Wiltshire's Rubbish Leaflet!

Residents in Abbey Meads should ignore any leaflets they've received about changes to waste and recycling collections, according to ward councillors.

The leaflets are from Wiltshire Council, and the information only applies to residents who live in the Wiltshire Council area - not the Borough of Swindon.

But the leaflet has been sent to some addresses in Swindon because it's cheaper to deliver it that way, according to Wiltshire Council.

That's caused confusion because households in Abbey Meads who've received the leaflet may think their collection days are changing - which they're not.

Cllr Peter Heaton-Jones said, "This confusion really is regrettable.  I received the leaflet myself this weekend and wondered how all the waste collections could be changing when I, and fellow ward councillors Vera Tomlinson and Peter Stoddart, hadn't heard a thing about it!

"But then I noticed the leaflet was from Wiltshire Council.  When I looked for an explanation, it seems Wiltshire Council had decided to post the leaflet to all households in this postcode, which cuts across the boundary between Swindon and Wiltshire.

"Wiltshire Council's explanation is that it's cheaper to do it like that because of the way bulk delivery services operate.  I can understand that, but couldn't they have included a note saying 'please check whether this affects you' or something similar?

"If you've received a copy of the leaflet but you live in the Borough of Swindon, it doesn't apply to you in any way.  Your waste and recycling services are not changing.  The best thing to do with the leaflet is....recycle it!"
